Over the next few weeks I’m hoping to cover as many artists playing Bluefest as I can as well as hopefully posting daily top picks. I expect many of these artists picks are going to be versions of quick hits but many at a time. I may also do a career overview for Queens Of The Stone Age so keep your eyes pealed (QOTSA JOKES), on that note here’s Qotsa leader Joshua Homme’s wife, Brody Dalle.
Originally in The Distillers and Spinnerette, Brody Dalle is an Aussie hard rock queen but you wouldn’t believe she was an Aussie from either her music or interviews. Dalle’s new solo album sounds like a female take on a Qotsa sound and her new album Diploid Love even features Qotsa bassist Michael Shuman. Her voice has the perfect amount of grit and some of the production is really amazing considering the hard rock it goes for. I expect her show to be an epic one.
The lead single “Don’t Mess With Me” could easily be mistaken for Qotsa until Dalle starts singing and the song is a hard rock pop marvel, somehow walking that line perfectly. “Blood In The Gutters” is a vicious song about overcoming your downfalls and becoming a stronger person and the song is tingling with passion and emotion especially in Dalle’s howls. Lastly “Meet The Foetus/Oh The Joy” is engineered in such a way that its bass line sounds like it’s almost electronica and the song perfectly straddles that line between hard rock and pop once again, the halfway point twist kicks the energy up and turns it into an awesome dance-rock song.
Dalle is playing the Black Sheep Stage on Tuesday July 8th @ 7:15 PM
